Sutra Records helped bolster
MGM Records'
profits during 1965 and 1966, primarily due to the success of The Lovin'
Spoonful. Art Kass ultimately became unhappy with his distribution deal
with MGM and started Buddah Records in 1967. He brought in Neil Bogart,
who was an MGM General Manager in the early sixties, and had also worked
at Cameo-Parkway Records. Neil Bogart left Buddah Records in 1973 to start
his Casablanca Records label.
Art Kass sold the label to Essex Entertainment, who managed the catalog until 1993, when they sold it to BMG. Recordings from 1967/1968 were issued on Pye International in Britain until the Buddah label made its appearance in 1968. |
