Chart
Records was formed in 1962 in Atlanta, Ga. by Gary Walker. He formed the
label primarily as a means to record some of the local talents. In 1964,
Slim Williamson bought the label for $350. This is what it had cost Walker
to have the label registered with the musicians union. Williamson took
on Ott Stephens (a DJ at WPEH) as a partner, and together they formed Chart
Records Inc. in March 1964.
In
March 1969, Williamson sold the company for well over a half a million
dollars to Audio Fidelity. Not a bad price for a company that was originally
bought for $350.
In
1970, Chart was purchased back from Audio Fidelity. It was turned over
to Williamson's oldest son Cliff, who was named president. Slim wanted
to attend to his radio station concerns.
Sometime
in 1975 Chart Records quietly folded.
The
label was revived as "Chart Action" by Jack Rodamaker in 1977. |
